FRAI.lab Medicine

The FRAI.lab Medicine is an innovative AI computing laboratory at the Freiburg University Medical Center.

Our key points:

Direct integration of AI technologies in the OR.

Enables start-ups and companies to develop innovative solutions.

Combination of imaging, molecular diagnostics and intraoperative data.

Development and validation in a real hospital environment.

Networking medicine, AI research and industry.

What problem are we solving and why?

In neurosurgery, precise diagnoses and interventions are essential in order to achieve the best possible treatment outcome. But despite modern medical technology, there are major challenges:

Startups and SMEs often do not have direct access to real OR data, which makes it difficult to develop and validate new AI models.

AI-supported assistance systems are not yet established in many hospitals or are difficult to integrate into existing processes.

Technical requirements and organizational complexity make it difficult to implement innovative solutions.

What problem are we solving and why?

In neurosurgery, precise diagnoses and interventions are essential in order to achieve the best possible treatment outcome. But despite modern medical technology, there are major challenges:

  • Lack of access to medical data: Startups and SMEs often do not have direct access to real surgical data, which makes it difficult to develop and validate new AI models.
  • Limited integration of AI technologies: AI-supported assistance systems are not yet established in many hospitals or are difficult to integrate into existing processes.
  • Regulatory and technical hurdles: Technical requirements and organizational complexity make it difficult to implement innovative solutions.

Why is there this problem?

The main causes of these challenges lie in several areas:

Many hospitals do not have the technical requirements to test AI applications.

Companies lack access to OR data to train algorithms.

Medical data is often isolated and not available in a standardized format.

Data protection regulations make the exchange and processing more difficult.

AI experts often have little direct contact with the real challenges in surgery.

Clinics lack the expertise to use AI models effectively.

The development of new AI-supported medical technology is expensive and time-consuming.

A lack of test environments and regulatory requirements increase the risk of commercial failure.

Why is there this problem?

The main causes of these challenges lie in several areas:

  • Lack of infrastructure for AI development in medicine
    • Many hospitals do not have the technical requirements to test AI applications.
    • Companies lack access to OR data to train algorithms.
  • Fragmented and difficult to access data
    • Medical data is often isolated and not available in a standardized format.
    • Data protection regulations make the exchange and processing more difficult.
  • Lack of interdisciplinary cooperation
    • AI experts often have little direct contact with the real challenges in surgery.
    • Clinics lack the expertise to use AI models effectively.
  • High innovation risk for companies
    • The development of new AI-supported medical technology is expensive and time-consuming.
    • A lack of test environments and regulatory requirements increase the risk of commercial failure.
