Using AI safely: For regulated industries and critical infrastructure

How AI is being introduced responsibly in sensitive areas

The use of AI in critical infrastructures, such as energy supply, healthcare, finance, or administration, offers great opportunities, but also poses special challenges for organizations. In regulated environments, AI solutions must not only function, but also be traceable, secure, and compliant. In the KRITIS sector in particular, we often see AI projects stalling when data quality, governance, or regulatory guidelines are lacking, or when IT, specialist departments, and compliance do not work closely enough together.

AI is successful when organizations clearly prioritize, assess risks in a structured manner, and select use cases that are both technically feasible and regulatory auditable – in line with requirements such as the EU AI Act. The key is an approach that combines security, transparency, and practical feasibility.

This is exactly where the CyberForum's AI Innovation Lab, a collaborative project within the AI Alliance, comes in: We provide guidance in the complex regulatory environment, develop viable AI concepts, and support critical infrastructures in introducing AI in a secure, responsible, and effective manner.

Our approaches to solutions

Our formats for regulated industries & critical infrastructures

Free initial consultation & AI readiness check

In the initial consultation, we clarify which AI application areas are realistic and permissible in your regulated environment, which questions exist regarding compliance, governance, and risk, and which internal requirements must be met. We show you which steps lead to a regulatory-compliant AI roadmap.

AI strategy and governance

We develop an AI strategy that combines technical feasibility, risk requirements, and regulatory guidelines such as the EU AI Act, data protection, and auditability. In doing so, we define roles, responsibilities, control mechanisms, and processes that are necessary for the safe and transparent use of AI in critical infrastructures.

Development of AI use cases

Energy and utility companies benefit from forecasting and anomaly detection, healthcare and social services from documentation or case support, and financial service providers from risk assessments and fraud detection. However, it is crucial in all areas that AI functions securely, transparently, and in compliance with regulations. We therefore only identify use cases that are economically viable, technically feasible, and compatible with compliance, data protection, and audit requirements.

Mediation of implementation partners for regulated AI projects

We connect you with partners who have practical experience in critical infrastructures and regulated industries—from research institutions and specialized AI providers to integrators for secure systems. We assist with the tendering and selection process and ensure that technical architecture, risk requirements, and compliance conditions are met.

Employee training & enablement

With our customized concepts, executives, specialist departments, and technical teams receive target group-specific training on governance, the EU AI Act, risk and responsibility models, safe AI use, documentation, bias detection, and testing processes.

Startup cooperations & venture clienting

Startups can also provide valuable impetus in critical infrastructures, for example with solutions for documentation, forecasting, anomaly detection, or case processing, often with on-premise options and clear governance and audit mechanisms. CyberLab gives you access to vetted startups with experience in security, data protection, and compliance requirements.

Funding advice

Funding programs can also facilitate the introduction of AI in critical infrastructures. We examine which programs are suitable and support you in aligning requirements from security, data protection, governance, and the EU AI Act with the funding criteria.
