AI Challenge Workshop: Green AI - Living in a changing climate
AI Challenge accepted? Register for the workshop day of the AI Challenge in the Stuttgart region by May 30, 2025!
Call for the AI Challenge workshop in the Stuttgart region
The KI-Allianz Baden-Württemberg is taking up the idea of AI engineering and inviting people to the AI Challenge in the Stuttgart region.
Can we work together to make AI methods usable for specific applications in companies and public administrations - in such a way that they generate added value in practice and work in the long term? And will we manage to establish regional networks with lasting activity in order to sustainably advance this topic in Baden-Württemberg? We think: yes!
The workshop is based on the PAISE® process model, which was developed at the CC-KING Competence Center for AI Engineering in Karlsruhe, and is aimed at managers and experts from business, public administrations and scientific institutions.
The specific topics of the workshop are divided into four thematic strands and are based on the specific problems and needs for action identified by the participants.
Kick-off event: July 7, 2025, Stuttgart | Workshop: July 8, 2025, Stuttgart (registration deadline: May 30, 2025) | Participation free of charge | No AI knowledge required

Topic 1:
Analysis and forecast of the effectiveness of climate adaptation measures
Methods of data collection and analysis (e.g. of sensor data) of climate protection and climate adaptation measures at building, neighborhood or infrastructural level:
- Methods for data collection / generation
- Development and use of Kl-supported analysis tools for efficient data evaluation (analysis of data collection and sensor data)
- Analysis and forecast of the effectiveness of measures (including heat protection, urban greenery, shading, urban planning, mobility services)
- Development of simulation environments
- Cost-benefit analysis for climate adaptation measures (if implemented or not)
How can an AI-based analysis determine the effectiveness of climate adaptation measures in order to develop well-founded guidelines for their future implementation?

Topic 2:
AI-based knowledge platform for sustainable business parks
AI-supported methods of stocktaking and problem analysis, knowledge management and experiential learning as well as the optimization of measures and resources for the sustainable development of industrial estates (e.g. energy management, climate adaptation measures, land management)
- AI-based expert systems
- Integration and user-friendly provision of knowledge on regional, municipal and neighborhood-related climate adaptation (e.g. regional climate adaptation studies, good practice)
- Support for data-supported neighborhood management for the optimal and efficient use of synergies in the commercial area
- Support for public participation / acceptance analysis for planned and implemented measures
- Resource and impact-oriented optimization models (e.g. resolving conflicting goals between ecological and economic sustainability)
The central objective is to provide municipal actors from planning administrations, economic development or neighborhood management with practical action and orientation knowledge in order to support the sustainable conversion of existing commercial areas in a problem-, impact- and resource-oriented manner.

Topic 3:
AI-supported spatial monitoring for the Stuttgart region
Evaluation of high-resolution satellite data using GeoAI approaches to generate new spatial information by means of extraction, classification, recognition, etc. and, if necessary, automation of processes using deep learning to support stakeholders in the areas of construction, planning, environment (especially urban and regional planning).
- Monitoring and presentation of the development of settlements and infrastructure in time series using current and historical image data
- Recording the condition of natural and open space elements (e.g. vitality of forests, urban vegetation, etc.)
- Automatic recognition of the structural development status of land potential for residential and commercial use and feeding into the GIS systems of the planning administration or into digital twins
- Conversion of data relevant to land-use planning into the "XPlanung" format
- Linking of different spatial data and pattern recognition (e.g. movement patterns to support the planning of traffic infrastructure)
The information obtained through AI is intended to provide the basis for long-term, standardized and automated spatial observation for regional and urban land-use planning authorities.

Topic 4:
Municipal and regional digital twins
institutions. How can digital twins in conjunction with AI at the city (UDZ) and regional (RDZ) level lay the foundation for a more sustainable future?
Use of digital twins of cities and regions to simulate:
- Energy consumption and energy-efficient urban planning, as well as predictive maintenance
- Intelligent traffic management, climate-neutral buildings and resource-conserving production, smart grids
- CO₂ balances, optimization of renewable energies, CO₂ reduction through the circular economy
Interested companies and public administrations (solution seekers, data providers and solution providers) from the Stuttgart region and beyond are invited to register using the form and actively contribute to the preparation of the workshop content with their challenges and topics.
We welcome submissions on the following or similar topics:
- Regional and local weather forecasts (especially for extreme events)
- Urban and rural microclimate models
- Ecological costs of AI applications (e.g. energy consumption)
- Architecture proposal for customized IT systems with integrated AI/ML methods
- Checking the applicability of existing AI algorithms
- Development roadmaps for AI systems
Based on the proposed use cases, the Community Management Region Stuttgart of the AI Alliance together with the Fraunhofer IOSB will be in charge of preparing, moderating and following up on the workshop day. This will not incur any costs for the participants.
The workshop is prepared together with the participants (solution seekers, data providers and solution providers) and the partners of the AI Challenge. It combines compact keynote speeches on AI with a moderated analysis of specific needs and requirements. Solutions for the identified challenges are developed together in strategic discussion rounds.
Bring your solutions and use cases to the workshop. Join in and register!
AI Challenge in the Stuttgart region

July 8, 2025: Workshop day
How do you get started with successful AI projects for Green AI? We want to answer these questions together in our AI Challenge workshop in the Stuttgart region.
The aim of the workshop is to find solutions for the respective topics. Project roadmaps are to be developed from the solution approaches, which can then be implemented independently.
The workshop day will take place on July 8, 2025 under the direction of the AI experts from Fraunhofer IOSB on the premises of the Verband Region Stuttgart (9:00 - approx. 18:00) and offers the space for a guided process to develop a project roadmap.
The focus is on cooperation between users, solution providers and service providers. The aim is to jointly develop a roadmap: What are the next steps for successful implementation?
In interactive discussions, the requirements of the users will be compared with the technology options of the solution providers. The day will be complemented by best-practice examples of successful AI projects.
Presentation of the results and next steps
Following the workshop day of the AI Challenge, the focus is on presenting the results of the work and planning concrete next steps. Together, we will lay the foundations for the sustainable implementation of the ideas developed. These include
